Making Sense of Social Media

TwitterFacebook.  LinkedIn. MySpace. Reddit.  Stumbleupon.  Tagged.  Technorati.  Mixx.  Newsvine.  Delicious.  Just to name a few.  Social networking has taken the world by storm. 

How many sites are you connected to?  How many are you active on?  More to the point - how many should you be active on?  Where do you reach the point of overcommitment, where you become unable to keep up?  The answer is... it depends.

To gain clarity, you need to do is take a look at your goals.  What do you hope to acheive through social media connections/  Are your goals strictly personal?  Are they purely professional?  Or are they a blend of the two? 

Next you need to examine how much time you are willing to devote to social networking.  Is social networking a purely personal experience or will you use automated responses to help to "be there" when you just can't be. 

And how much of yourself will you reveal in your social networking identity.  Is it the real you or is a fictious pesonna created soley for the purpose of interacting on your behalf?

Each of these questions plays a role in determine how you use social media to your best advantage.  In the coming weeks, we will examine a variety the multitude of social media sites.  We'll look at who is using, how they utilize them and why they use one over another.  Additionally, we'll share some of the best tips,tricks and tools to make using these sites easier and more beneficial.
