The railroad industry’s appetite for data is immense – and continues to grow. From surveys of employees’work/rest patterns to event-recorders to locomotives, there is no shortage of new data to analyze. Some of this data is targeted to answer specific business questions – but what other business questions could be answered with the same data, either solo or when integrated with other data the business already has? For example, the purpose of the work/rest study is to evaluate patterns between work schedules and fatigue. But if tied to performance data can we answer questions about on-time performance and work schedules. Or if tied event recorder data (see Rail Runner article) what can we learn about work schedules / fatigue and efficient train handling? Rarely is there a single use for data – insight is gained by creatively examining how to use extract information by combining data.
